Banjos are a 4, 5 or 6 stringed appliance that is believed to have been inspired by the instruments used by African slaves in the Caribbean since the 17th Century. The earliest known picture of a slave playing a banjo-like instrument is in an American folk-art piece 'The Old Plantation' which was painted around 1785-95. The 5-string banjo was made popular by American minstrel performer Joe Sweeney in the 1830's who played one on the stage during his act.
