Bass guitar background information:
The bass guitar is similar in appearance and build to an electric or acoustic guitar except for a longer neck and scale length and having 4-6 strings. They can be traced back to the 1930’s when Paul Turmarc developed the first electric bass guitar, designed to be played horizontally rather than the vertical playing style of the double bass. These were not successful.
However, in Oct 1951 Leo Fender and George Fullerton began producing the Precision Bass (or P Bass) and history was made. This instrument revolutionised the music industry as its design was much simpler and more lightweight to travel with than the heavy, cumbersome double bass that it would replace within popular music, in particular Rock’n’Roll.
In 1953 Gibson released the first short scale violin shaped electric guitar with an extendable end pin so the instrument was more versatile being able to be played vertical as well as horizontally.
Several other companies began to realise the potential of these instruments and began manufacturing them, and their popularity with artists grew. In the 1960’s production of electric basses was becoming international with companies such as Yamaha, Teisco and Guyatone all introducing their own models.
Throughout the 70’s and 80’s the design of electric basses became more sophisticated however in the late 80’s a curveball was thrown with the trend set by MTV’s Unplugged series. This series which featured popular artists doing acoustic versions of their hits was immensely popular and so the hollow bodied acoustic bass guitar had found a following.
Today the bass guitar, electric or acoustic is still as popular as ever and there is a whole plethora of iconic names linked to this instrument including: Peter Cetera (Chicago), Adam Clayton (U2), Sheryl Crow, John Deacon (Queen), Bruce Foxton (The Jam), Noel Gallagher (Oasis), Mick Hucknell (Simply Red), Paul McCartney (The Beatles, Wings), Tom Petty, Prince, Suzi Quatro, Kenny Rogers, Sting (The Police) and Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones) to name a few.
